Costs associated with having a website include:
Webdesign |
Domain Name |
Hosting |
Proprietary programs |
Licensing & eCommerce fees |
Webdesign
- Graphic design: This includes all artwork for the site.
- Programming: A simple site will require very little programming. A complex or database driven may cost thousands of dollars.
- Photography: If required a professional photographer may need to be employed.
- Content Editor: If at all possible, it is recommended to employ a professional editor.
Domain name
A domain name such as abc.com.au, will typically cost under $80 for two years and may incur a set-up fee.
Hosting
Every site needs to be hosted on a server. This is a special computer whose sole job is to deliver webpages to users upon request.
Hosting a website starts at about $10 a month. The hosting server should ideally be close to the users - this will result in speedier download times. To host a site yourself requires full time connection, a good connection, good security, a server and software.
The two main types of web hosting:
Shared hosting: Your site shares the server's resources with other websites meaning possibly slower responsiveness (than a dedicated server). Security can be an issue. Starts at around $25 a month. More bandwidth and facilities will cost more money.
Dedicated Hosting: This means there is a dedicated server just for your website. It is very customisable and can be faster. Has good security. Is expensive.
Proprietary programs
If you wish to maintain the site yourself or have a database driven site, proprietary programs may need to be purchased.
Licensing and eCommerce fees
Depending on the website requirements, licensing software and eCommerce fees may apply.
